City Hall-Civil Service

I worked for 22 years as the Chief Financial Officer of a New Jersey municipality.

Working for a town
has wonderful perquisites:
any jerk can call you names.

 What kinds of names?
Try on “crook and thief” to start
or how about, “bottom feeder.”

That’s over the phone.
Go to a public meeting
when tax bills are mailed!
A very bad trip, indeed,
after the hounds have sharpened their teeth
to chew you a new asshole.

“Just sit there and smile!
Because they pay you the big bucks
plus your expenses!”

“Don’t get them madder!
The crowd can get ugly.
We don’t want bad press.”

You can’t bite them back.
City Hall’s too frustrating….
just sit back and listen.

There is no recourse
but to count down how many days left
‘til you have your pension.
